Some gardens have simply got ahead of their owners. Growth has built up over a season or several, borders have disappeared under weeds, hedges have gained a foot in every direction and the whole thing has reached the point where a normal visit would barely scratch the surface. A Garden Reset is the bridge between that condition and manageable ongoing care.
Why it exists
Bring the garden back to a manageable starting point.
Regular garden care only works when there is something to keep on top of. Put a fortnightly visit into a garden with two years of accumulated growth and every visit gets swallowed by the backlog. Nothing looks any better, the jobs that actually matter never get reached and the client quite reasonably wonders what they are paying for.
A Reset clears that backlog in one defined piece of work. It is planned properly, scoped in writing and priced on its own, and it ends with the garden at a level where routine visits can hold it and improve it. After that, the ongoing care is doing what it should: maintaining and developing a garden rather than fighting one.
Resets are usually the point at which a garden turns a corner. It is the most visible work we do, and it is often the most satisfying, because the difference between the first morning and the last afternoon is considerable.
Garden clearance
For gardens that have been left.
We are regularly called to gardens that have been left. A property bought at auction or after a long sale, a house that has stood empty, a garden that ran away during a period of illness, a rental returned in poor condition, or a much loved garden whose owner can no longer manage it and would rather see it brought back than watch it disappear. None of that needs explaining or apologising for. It is ordinary, it happens to good gardens, and it is straightforward work for a team with the right equipment.
Garden clearance work of this kind usually means brambles, nettles and ground elder taken out of beds and boundaries, self seeded saplings removed before they turn into a tree problem, grass that has gone to meadow cut down in stages rather than in one pass that chokes the mower, and shrubs cut back to a shape they can grow out of. Paths, steps and patios are cleared and swept so the structure of the garden reappears. Dumped material, old pots, collapsed netting, rotten timber and accumulated debris are gathered and dealt with.
There is usually a point on the first day where the garden looks worse than when we arrived, because everything has been pulled out and nothing has been tidied yet. That is normal. We do not leave a site in that state.
Scope
What a Reset involves.
The scope is agreed after we have seen the garden, and it is written down before we start, so there is no confusion about what is included. Most Resets draw on the same body of work in different proportions.
Clearance and cutting back
Overgrowth, weed growth, unwanted self seeded plants and material that has accumulated where it should not be. Shrubs, climbers and perennials are brought to a sensible framework, taking out dead, damaged and crossing growth, and reducing anything that has outgrown its space in a way the plant will recover from.
Weeding and bed work
Beds and borders taken back to clean soil rather than a surface tidy, because perennial weeds left in place return within weeks. Edging, light cultivation, mulching where agreed and general definition, which is what makes a border read as cared for even before the planting fills out.
Shaping and seasonal debris
Form restored to hedges and shrubs, with edges, lines and proportions back where they should be. Leaf removal and seasonal debris clearance matter most in autumn and winter, when a layer left on a lawn or in the crown of a plant does real damage.
Waste processing runs throughout: chipping, composting, stacking or removing material by whichever method suits the property. Where it makes sense, we will also deal with the practical things that stop a garden being maintainable, such as a gate that will not open wide enough for a mower, or a compost area that has never been given a proper position.
Price and fit
Quoted on its own, and only where it is needed.
A Reset is quoted separately from any recurring visits. It is a defined project with a start and an end, so it is priced as one, based on the size of the garden, the extent of the growth, the equipment and labour needed, access, and how the green waste will be handled. We will tell you how long we expect to be on site and, for larger gardens, how the work will be split across days. If we find something significant once we are underway, such as a structural problem hidden by growth or a tree that turns out to need a qualified arborist, we stop and discuss it rather than carrying on and adding it to the bill.
Green waste is agreed in advance. On site composting and chipping are preferred where there is space, both because they are better for the garden and because they keep the cost down. Brown bin collections work for smaller volumes. Larger removals from site are priced separately, since the volume is what drives the cost.
A Reset is recommended where it is needed. It is not compulsory, and we will not propose one for the sake of a larger first invoice. Plenty of gardens are already in good order, and if yours has been well kept we will say so at the Garden Health Check and go straight into regular visits. Equally, a Reset does not oblige you to take on ongoing care. Some clients want the garden brought back and are happy to keep it themselves afterwards, and that is a perfectly sensible plan.
Afterwards
The first year is when the difference shows.
Where a Reset leads into Four Seasons Garden Care, the two are planned together. We already know the garden in detail by the end of the Reset, so the first regular visits start from a position of knowledge rather than discovery, and the visit pattern reflects what the garden actually turned out to be once the growth came off.
Borders that were cleared in the spring fill out properly by midsummer. Shrubs cut back hard put on clean new growth. Lawns recover their edges. Hedges hold a shape instead of drifting. Photographs taken at the Reset become the reference point for everything that follows, which is why we take them.
We also keep an eye on the things a Reset tends to uncover. Cleared ground grows weeds enthusiastically for a season or two, hard pruned shrubs need following up the year after, and areas that have not been walked for a while often reveal a repair that is worth planning. Those are picked up through ongoing visits or, where the work is larger, quoted as a Garden Project.
