Every garden we look after begins the same way, with a visit. The Garden Health Check is where we walk the property with you, understand what you want from it and work out the level of attention it genuinely needs. It is the only honest way to recommend a schedule, because no two gardens of the same size need the same amount of time.
What it is
An assessment and planning visit, not a quick look over the fence.
Anyone can quote for mowing a lawn without leaving the van. Understanding a garden takes longer, because the important things are rarely the obvious ones: a hedge that has crept forward a foot each year, borders that have lost their edge, a shrub that has been cut at the wrong time for three seasons, a patio that drains the wrong way after heavy rain.
By the end of the visit we will have a clear picture of the garden as it stands, what it needs in the next few weeks, what it will need through the rest of the year, and how much time that realistically takes. You will have a much better sense of whether ongoing care is the right route for you, and we will know whether we are the right people to take responsibility for it.
Nothing is committed at that stage. The Health Check exists so that the recommendation which follows is based on the garden in front of us rather than on assumptions.
On the day
Walking the garden together.
We start by walking the areas you want managed. That might be the whole property, or it might be the front garden and the main borders while you keep the vegetable patch for yourself. Either is fine, and knowing the boundary from the outset prevents the confusion that turns up later when nobody agreed who was looking after the orchard.
As we walk, we separate what we see into three groups. Urgent needs are the things that should be dealt with soon, before they cause damage or cost more to put right: a leaning fence panel, a blocked gully, a hedge growing into a cable, self seeded saplings that are about to become tree work. Seasonal needs are the jobs tied to a particular window, such as pruning at the right point in the year, dividing perennials, autumn leaf management or hedge cutting once nesting has finished. Routine needs are the steady, repeating work that keeps a garden looking cared for week after week.
That distinction matters, because it is what determines the visit pattern. A garden with a long list of urgent and seasonal work usually needs a concentrated effort first. A garden that is broadly sound simply needs the routine work picked up on a sensible rhythm.
What we look at
The garden, and the practical arrangements around it.
We look at plant condition across the garden, not just the overall impression. Growth habit, signs of stress, pest and disease, plants that have outgrown their position and plants that are being crowded out by something more vigorous. Beds and borders are assessed for weed pressure, soil condition, edging, mulch and whether the planting still does what it was intended to do. Shrubs and climbers are checked for the pruning they have had and the pruning they actually need, which is not always the same thing.
Hedges are measured up in practical terms: height, width, how far they have crept, what equipment reaching the top safely would need and whether they are due a routine trim or a proper reduction. Lawns are looked at for wear, moss, thatch, drainage, edges and the way they sit against the beds around them. Hard surfaces, paths, steps, patios and drives are checked for weed growth, algae, moss and the slip risk that comes with a shaded Suffolk winter. Where there is a pond or a natural pool, we look at water clarity, surface debris, marginal planting and the general condition of the setting.
Alongside the garden itself, we go through the practical arrangements that decide how visits actually run: where we can park, how machinery gets in, gate widths, water and power, where green waste can go and whether there is space for composting on site.
The conversation
The result you want, and how involved you want to be.
Two clients can own identical gardens and want entirely different things from them. One wants everything sharp, edged and immaculate for the weekend. Another wants a relaxed garden that supports wildlife, with the structure kept in order and the wilder corners left alone. A third has simply run out of time and wants the whole thing taken off their hands.
So we ask. We talk about the standard you are aiming for, which areas matter most to you, whether there is anything in the garden you are particularly attached to and anything you would happily lose. We also ask how involved you want to be. Some clients enjoy the garden and want to keep doing the parts they like while we handle the rest. Others would prefer to be told what has been done and what is coming next, and otherwise left to enjoy the result.
None of this is a formality. It shapes where the time goes on every visit for the next year, so it is worth getting right at the start.

After the visit we put together a proposal for your property, setting out the areas we would manage, the visit pattern we recommend and why, the arrangements agreed on site, what sits outside the regular plan, and the price for the ongoing care.
1. Garden Health Check
We visit, walk the garden with you and understand its condition, its priorities and the result you want.
2. Garden Reset where needed
Overgrown, overdue or neglected areas are brought back to a manageable starting point as a separate piece of work. A Reset is recommended where it is needed, never applied as standard.
3. Four Seasons Garden Care
Regular visits begin on the agreed schedule, with priorities managed through the year and clear updates on progress.
You do not need to tidy up before we arrive. Seeing the garden as it normally is tells us far more than seeing it after a rushed weekend. It helps if you can be there for at least part of the visit, because the conversation about what you want is as valuable as the inspection itself. If that is difficult, we can walk the garden on our own and talk it through afterwards by phone.
